Work record - shoot twelve - Beauty and the Beast

In this shoot I was trying to illustrate the story Beauty and the beast by dressing Amelia up in the costume and using some props from the film and book. I made the yellow dress out of sheets and it is very similar to that worn by the character in the book however to improve I would make sure that the dress that I pinned the sheets to was not visible as this changed the appearance from the dress. Overall I think this shoot went quite well due the the fact that the background is quite evenly lit and this was a shoot I completed at home. When I was planning this shoot I had initially intended to use the actual book to photograph so that it could be edited to seem as if the characters had left the book however when it came to it I could not find the one that I wanted so changed how I edited the photos.
In this photo I used the lyrics from the most famous song from the film as the background of the photograph. I like the composition of this photo because she is standing in a pose that I found was common for this and other Disney characters and the rose looks attractive against the black and white background. To improve this photo I would just make sure that the dress looks as much like the characters dress ad possible.
In this photo you can't see the dress so it doesn't really illustrate the book as much as I would have liked however  this is quite an attractive photograph. To improve this photograph I would just change the composition slightly so that the rose doesn't cover so much of her face up. It didn't affect this photograph but to improve the shoot as a whole I would do it in the studio to maintain the same lighting throughout the shoot and so that the dress can stand out more on a white or coloured background.

Evaluation

I really enjoyed this unit because it gave me more choice about what I could photograph. However if I was to do this again I would not choose story telling again as I felt at times it was a bit restricting and got a bit repetitive.

I did both studio shoots and location shoots but found there were some issues and positives with both.
My first shoot was the Alice in wonderland shoot in the studio where I set up the tea party with Sophie and the doll. The overall photographs that I edited turned out well however the lighting in these photos was very dark and at the time I could not sort this out. If I were to redo this shoot I would make sure the lighting was brighter although I did achieve the slightly dark setting that I wanted. Also the composition of the photo was good as Sophie is the main focus of the photo.

My second story telling shoot was the teenage life story in the studio. With this shoot I was trying to portray the way that teenagers lives are expected to be with the realistic and expected versions. This shoot went well because the lighting was good and bright. Another thing that went well with this shoot is that I used the blue background for the education shoot and the red for the party Shoot as these colours represent each thing well. Once again the composition in this shoot when Sophie is surrounded by the papers emphasises the fact that she has lots of work to do, which was the intention. To improve this shoot I would try and edit the photos in a more interesting and complex ways these photos may be a little boring.

The third shoot I completed was the fairy location shoot. This shoot went well because the natural lighting made very natural relaxed photographs which fit with the fairy theme that I had going with this shoot. I made the head dress out of flowers so it fits in with the naturalistic photograph. To improve this shoot I would use a more natural colour dress for Amelia as I feel this clashes with the natural due to its synthetic colouring. If I were to do this shoot again I would perhaps use another girl in a simular dress just to make the photos different slightly.

The fourth shoot I did was in the style of a comic book or cartoon. I chose to use Shannon because her blue hair fit with the theme of the shoot and I knew that she would pull the facial expressions that I wanted her to. This shoot went well as the lighting was bright and background was colourful and eye-catching as it should be. To improve this shoot I would like to try and use props such as a cape to make Shannon a character so that there was a more obvious reason for the facial expressions. I would also get her time wear a brighter top that clashes with the background so that it is obvious that I used bright colours on purpose.

The fifth shoot was the chalk board shoot which is one of my favourite shoots from unit two. what makes this shoot my favourite is the composition and lighting as this was really affective when telling the story that I intended to tell with this shoot. I also like how I used Taylor's facial expressions in order to illustrate the word shown on the chalk board. Another thing that I like about this shoot is that I used a chalk board as this is quite an old fashion thing when I could have use technology. To improve this shoot I would make sure that the chalk is clearly visible in the photos as when it came to editing they were uncloar and led to me drawing them however this resulted in then being to bright and unrealistic.

For my sixth shoot I wanted to show the story of generation and growing up by photographing different people's shoes in the studio. This shoot went well because it was easy to compose these photos exactly how I wanted it as it is an object instead of models. The lighting in these photos worked well because it showed all of the small details and scratches in the shoes which represents the generation. To improve this photo shoot I would try and link the shoes a little more other than the colour as when it came to editing it was limited what I could do with them. Another improvement I would make would be that when I edit to do more interesting edits as this once again got a bit repetitive.

For my shoot seven I did another Alice in wonderland shoot however I chose to do a location shoot as I felt that the setting played a role in telling this story. What went well in this shoot was the lighting and setting of the shoot. what I didn't like about this shoot was that the dress Sophie wore was very obviously a fancy dress costume and therefore made the photo seem very set up where as I would have liked to have a natural shoot to fit with the storyline.

Shoot eight is another one of my favourite shoots due to its positive and happy appearance and theme. What went well with this shoot is that I used a lot of relevant and attractive props to illustrate this milestone of life. The editing of this shoot also went well because I knew what I wanted to do with it. To improve this shoot I would consider using more models so that it wasn't as if she was celebrating on her own.

Shoot nine was a location shoot in the woods as what I was trying to achieve This shoot is another of my favourite shoots as I love how it is childish and magical. What worked really well is that the setting of the book matched the setting of the photo so when it came to editing the characters fit in well. To improve this shoot I would try using more characters and more books.

Shoot ten was in the style of Little red riding hood on a location shoot. This shoot wasn't the best because I completed it to late in the day either lighting was not very good, however once I had edited this shoot it turned out ok. To improve this shoot I would do it earlier in the day so that I get some natural light in the photos and I would also consider the composition more as some of the photos are quite unplanned.

My eleventh shoot was where I had Amelia holing up the pages saying 'once Apon a time' and 'she lived happily ever after' as these are the common begging and end to a story. What went well with this shoot was the lighting and bright colouring as this gave the photos a very positive happy feel. If I were to do this shoot again I would consider getting more words or get props to actuallybhelp illustrate a story however overall I was pleased with this shoot.

My final shoot was in the style of Beauty and the Beast. What went well with this shoot was that I used props and costume to illustrate the story. If I did this shoot again I would make a lot of improvements. Firstly I would do it in the studio as this would help light the photos properly. I would also make sure that the dress was better and you could not tell his wife it was constructed. Finally I would take photographs of the book itself so that I could make it seem as if she had come out of the book and into real life.

Overall this unit went quite well and I am pleased with the majority of my shoots. As an overall improvement I would try and spend mire time on the composition and layout of the shoots and be more experimental when it comes to editing. From this unit as a whole I have learnt how to add cartoon characters into my photos. This has also given me more practice with both location and studio shoots and my composition has improved since unit one.

Connecting essay five

In this photograph I have tried to create a comic style photograph. Shannons bright blue hair naturally fits with the vibrancy of comic books. Her facial expression is very dramatic and obvious as this is how the photo tells a story. The photo is edited so that it is cartoon like. There is a plain background so that Shannon stands out against. She is also placed central as she is the main focus of the photo.

This photo is of a girl who has been edited to look cartoon like. Her hair is ginger so stands out against the cartoon style background. The statement necklace adds to the detail in the photograph as it is only really the background and hair with the colour. There seems to be a light coming from the front onto the models face making her face the main focus of the photo. The facial expression is quite plain but it is still obvious that this is a comic style photograph.

I have chosen to connect these two photographs as they both show cartoon, comic strip style photographs. Both models in the photographs have brightly coloured hair which fits the style of the photo. The hair in both photos is he main focus point. Both models are placed centrally and are also the main focus of the photo. Both photos have used female models most likely as they can easily show more emotions. Lastly both photographs tell a story through either plain or exaggerated facial expression.

Work record - shoot eleven - Once upon a time...

In this shoot I was once again trying to tell a story through a series of photographs. I took the classic fairytale opening 'once upon a time' and ending 'she lived happily ever after' in order to create a photo story. I think this shoot went really well because the colours are bright and vibrant and very positive. The only thing that I would do to improve this shoot is try and keep the lighting the same as it would be easier to match the colour when it comes to editing.
In this photo Amelia is smiling and positive because the paper says 'she lived happily ever after' so she is illustrating this with her facial expression. I have used this editing style as it gives the photo a cartoon or comic strip appearence which would also use facial expressions to illustrate the story. I placed Amelia central with the writing just above her head so it is clear that she is the main focus of the photograph. To improve this photograph I would have composed it slightly differently with Amelia slightly more to the right so that none of the writing is covered by her head. The lighting I used for this shoot is very bright as I also feel this made the photos quite like a comic strip.

All a story needs is a beginning a middle and an end so I use the first line as the beginning, second line as the middle and main bulk of the story and the last line as the end. Although this is not an obvious story I feel that it gives enough detail that the audience can choose the story themselves. In each of the photos with words on I tried to get Amelia to stay in the same place as I didn't want this to change the photo. With the three facial expression photos in the middle I was trying to express how in story's there is not just one emotion, often characters go through a range of emotions, as the character does in my photo story. To improve this photo I would just make sure that there is an exact frame around each photo as some of them seem not to be despite the fact they did when I made the photo.

Work record - shoot ten - Little red riding hood

In this shoot I was trying to recreate the fairytale little red riding hood by using the traditional location and costume. I also tried to represent good and bad in this shoot by showing good in light clothing smiling and positive and bad in black with frowns and scowls. I don't feel that this shoot went as well as it could have partly due to the dull weather. If I were to do it again I would do it on a brighter day as this helps produce better photos. I would also slightly alter the location as I feel this location seems to public and obvious.
In this photo I made it all black and white except for the red hood as this is the most important convention of the story and makes the setting seem my serious and scarier. I have placed her off centre as I wanted to suggest that she was surrounded by the woods. Also I new that this would not take te attention off of her as it is the only colour in the photo. To improve this I would make sure Amelia's legs were coloured in as well as the bright red makes her seem almost ghost like which was not something that I intended to acheive.

In this photograph I was trying to portray good and evil. Charlotte is dressed in black and has been edited to be black and white as this makes this half of the photo seem negative. Her facial expression is also shows how she is representing bad as she isfrowning. In contrast Amelia is dressed in white with normal colour photo and is smiling. To improve this photograph I would make sure the line of colour and black and white is straight and I would also try and make the dresses worn by them the same so that the comparison is simply on the colour and facial expression.

Work record - shoot nine - Book woods

I really enjoyed this shoot as I knew exactly how I wanted to do it and that went to plan. I wanted to take photos of Amelia reading and then surround her with the characters from the book that she is reading. I chose the woods as the location as this is the setting of the gruffalo and that is one of the books she was reading. To improve this shoot I would try and make sure that the characters have none of their background on. If I were to do this shoot again I would do even more different books and characters.
In this photograph Amelia is reading the book 'the gruffalo'. During editing I then added the characters from the book around her so that it is as if the characters have come alive. I really like this photograph because is reminds me of childhood and it's as if the characters are sneaking away from Amelia as there existence is secret. To improve this photo  I would just make sure that the background behind the characters has completely gone so that it can't be seen on the new background photograph.
In this photograph I once again chose to put the characters from the book the gruffalo. In this photo however I chose to make them bolder as they are no longer supposed to be a pigment of Amelias imagination but instead have escaped the book. I really like this photograph because once again it reminds me of childhood.  To improve this photo I would just make sure that the tree is arbitrary and central to the photo.
