Photographer Five - Susan Cohen

I have chosen this photographer because her photos show important stages of life for example birth and the relationships between parents and there children. This photographer has interesting style of taking the photos for example some have a very natural background and others a more false studio background. The photographer also takes photos of generations which I would quite like to do in my work.

In this photo there is a natural background which you assume is the woman's home. Although the baby is crying this is still a very attractive photograph because it is natural and shows the baby in a realistic way as baby's do spend a lot of time crying, I like that the photo has been edited to be black and white as this makes the photo more interesting and adds something more to the photo while maintaining the natural feel that it gives. Also the relationship between the baby and the mother has been captured in the photograph telling this story.

In this photograph it shows who you assume is the father and son and allows the audience to see the similarities and differences allowing the audience to interpret their relationship. The photo has quite an unnatural black background which allows the audiences attention to remain entirely on the models in the photograph.

In this photograph the children are shown to be happy and it seems as if the elder looking child is guiding and looking after the younger one shown in the way she places her hand on his arm telling and representing the story of childhood. The photo has very natural lighting and colouring adding to the innocence and naturalness that the children are shown to have in the photograph. The fact that they are both wearing white also shows there innocence and the fact that they are natural and not just smiling at the camera gives the photo a far more natural, relaxed feeling.

In this photograph the boy is slightly of centre but he remains the central focus point. His head is slightly tilted and he is smiling however the photo appears to be quite natural. The audience focus is drawn to the smile and the boys eyes as they are the only things with bright colour against his pale skin. The natural green background also keeps the photo natural and this photo can also be interpreted to represent the stage of life of childhood.

Influence

I would like to take influence from this photographers work. Firstly I would like to try and use generations in my photographs to tell the story of life. I would also like to show the childhood story in my work as these seem to be sweet and attractive photographs.

Summary

Overall this photographer uses both natural and studio backgrounds to achieve natural childhood and family photography. Most of the models in this photographers work are natural instead of posed to maintain the natural feeling that the photos give.
