Work record - shoot twelve - Beauty and the Beast

In this shoot I was trying to illustrate the story Beauty and the beast by dressing Amelia up in the costume and using some props from the film and book. I made the yellow dress out of sheets and it is very similar to that worn by the character in the book however to improve I would make sure that the dress that I pinned the sheets to was not visible as this changed the appearance from the dress. Overall I think this shoot went quite well due the the fact that the background is quite evenly lit and this was a shoot I completed at home. When I was planning this shoot I had initially intended to use the actual book to photograph so that it could be edited to seem as if the characters had left the book however when it came to it I could not find the one that I wanted so changed how I edited the photos.
In this photo I used the lyrics from the most famous song from the film as the background of the photograph. I like the composition of this photo because she is standing in a pose that I found was common for this and other Disney characters and the rose looks attractive against the black and white background. To improve this photo I would just make sure that the dress looks as much like the characters dress ad possible.
In this photo you can't see the dress so it doesn't really illustrate the book as much as I would have liked however  this is quite an attractive photograph. To improve this photograph I would just change the composition slightly so that the rose doesn't cover so much of her face up. It didn't affect this photograph but to improve the shoot as a whole I would do it in the studio to maintain the same lighting throughout the shoot and so that the dress can stand out more on a white or coloured background.

Evaluation

I really enjoyed this unit because it gave me more choice about what I could photograph. However if I was to do this again I would not choose story telling again as I felt at times it was a bit restricting and got a bit repetitive.

I did both studio shoots and location shoots but found there were some issues and positives with both.
My first shoot was the Alice in wonderland shoot in the studio where I set up the tea party with Sophie and the doll. The overall photographs that I edited turned out well however the lighting in these photos was very dark and at the time I could not sort this out. If I were to redo this shoot I would make sure the lighting was brighter although I did achieve the slightly dark setting that I wanted. Also the composition of the photo was good as Sophie is the main focus of the photo.

My second story telling shoot was the teenage life story in the studio. With this shoot I was trying to portray the way that teenagers lives are expected to be with the realistic and expected versions. This shoot went well because the lighting was good and bright. Another thing that went well with this shoot is that I used the blue background for the education shoot and the red for the party Shoot as these colours represent each thing well. Once again the composition in this shoot when Sophie is surrounded by the papers emphasises the fact that she has lots of work to do, which was the intention. To improve this shoot I would try and edit the photos in a more interesting and complex ways these photos may be a little boring.

The third shoot I completed was the fairy location shoot. This shoot went well because the natural lighting made very natural relaxed photographs which fit with the fairy theme that I had going with this shoot. I made the head dress out of flowers so it fits in with the naturalistic photograph. To improve this shoot I would use a more natural colour dress for Amelia as I feel this clashes with the natural due to its synthetic colouring. If I were to do this shoot again I would perhaps use another girl in a simular dress just to make the photos different slightly.

The fourth shoot I did was in the style of a comic book or cartoon. I chose to use Shannon because her blue hair fit with the theme of the shoot and I knew that she would pull the facial expressions that I wanted her to. This shoot went well as the lighting was bright and background was colourful and eye-catching as it should be. To improve this shoot I would like to try and use props such as a cape to make Shannon a character so that there was a more obvious reason for the facial expressions. I would also get her time wear a brighter top that clashes with the background so that it is obvious that I used bright colours on purpose.

The fifth shoot was the chalk board shoot which is one of my favourite shoots from unit two. what makes this shoot my favourite is the composition and lighting as this was really affective when telling the story that I intended to tell with this shoot. I also like how I used Taylor's facial expressions in order to illustrate the word shown on the chalk board. Another thing that I like about this shoot is that I used a chalk board as this is quite an old fashion thing when I could have use technology. To improve this shoot I would make sure that the chalk is clearly visible in the photos as when it came to editing they were uncloar and led to me drawing them however this resulted in then being to bright and unrealistic.

For my sixth shoot I wanted to show the story of generation and growing up by photographing different people's shoes in the studio. This shoot went well because it was easy to compose these photos exactly how I wanted it as it is an object instead of models. The lighting in these photos worked well because it showed all of the small details and scratches in the shoes which represents the generation. To improve this photo shoot I would try and link the shoes a little more other than the colour as when it came to editing it was limited what I could do with them. Another improvement I would make would be that when I edit to do more interesting edits as this once again got a bit repetitive.

For my shoot seven I did another Alice in wonderland shoot however I chose to do a location shoot as I felt that the setting played a role in telling this story. What went well in this shoot was the lighting and setting of the shoot. what I didn't like about this shoot was that the dress Sophie wore was very obviously a fancy dress costume and therefore made the photo seem very set up where as I would have liked to have a natural shoot to fit with the storyline.

Shoot eight is another one of my favourite shoots due to its positive and happy appearance and theme. What went well with this shoot is that I used a lot of relevant and attractive props to illustrate this milestone of life. The editing of this shoot also went well because I knew what I wanted to do with it. To improve this shoot I would consider using more models so that it wasn't as if she was celebrating on her own.

Shoot nine was a location shoot in the woods as what I was trying to achieve This shoot is another of my favourite shoots as I love how it is childish and magical. What worked really well is that the setting of the book matched the setting of the photo so when it came to editing the characters fit in well. To improve this shoot I would try using more characters and more books.

Shoot ten was in the style of Little red riding hood on a location shoot. This shoot wasn't the best because I completed it to late in the day either lighting was not very good, however once I had edited this shoot it turned out ok. To improve this shoot I would do it earlier in the day so that I get some natural light in the photos and I would also consider the composition more as some of the photos are quite unplanned.

My eleventh shoot was where I had Amelia holing up the pages saying 'once Apon a time' and 'she lived happily ever after' as these are the common begging and end to a story. What went well with this shoot was the lighting and bright colouring as this gave the photos a very positive happy feel. If I were to do this shoot again I would consider getting more words or get props to actuallybhelp illustrate a story however overall I was pleased with this shoot.

My final shoot was in the style of Beauty and the Beast. What went well with this shoot was that I used props and costume to illustrate the story. If I did this shoot again I would make a lot of improvements. Firstly I would do it in the studio as this would help light the photos properly. I would also make sure that the dress was better and you could not tell his wife it was constructed. Finally I would take photographs of the book itself so that I could make it seem as if she had come out of the book and into real life.

Overall this unit went quite well and I am pleased with the majority of my shoots. As an overall improvement I would try and spend mire time on the composition and layout of the shoots and be more experimental when it comes to editing. From this unit as a whole I have learnt how to add cartoon characters into my photos. This has also given me more practice with both location and studio shoots and my composition has improved since unit one.

Connecting essay five

In this photograph I have tried to create a comic style photograph. Shannons bright blue hair naturally fits with the vibrancy of comic books. Her facial expression is very dramatic and obvious as this is how the photo tells a story. The photo is edited so that it is cartoon like. There is a plain background so that Shannon stands out against. She is also placed central as she is the main focus of the photo.

This photo is of a girl who has been edited to look cartoon like. Her hair is ginger so stands out against the cartoon style background. The statement necklace adds to the detail in the photograph as it is only really the background and hair with the colour. There seems to be a light coming from the front onto the models face making her face the main focus of the photo. The facial expression is quite plain but it is still obvious that this is a comic style photograph.

I have chosen to connect these two photographs as they both show cartoon, comic strip style photographs. Both models in the photographs have brightly coloured hair which fits the style of the photo. The hair in both photos is he main focus point. Both models are placed centrally and are also the main focus of the photo. Both photos have used female models most likely as they can easily show more emotions. Lastly both photographs tell a story through either plain or exaggerated facial expression.

Work record - shoot eleven - Once upon a time...

In this shoot I was once again trying to tell a story through a series of photographs. I took the classic fairytale opening 'once upon a time' and ending 'she lived happily ever after' in order to create a photo story. I think this shoot went really well because the colours are bright and vibrant and very positive. The only thing that I would do to improve this shoot is try and keep the lighting the same as it would be easier to match the colour when it comes to editing.
In this photo Amelia is smiling and positive because the paper says 'she lived happily ever after' so she is illustrating this with her facial expression. I have used this editing style as it gives the photo a cartoon or comic strip appearence which would also use facial expressions to illustrate the story. I placed Amelia central with the writing just above her head so it is clear that she is the main focus of the photograph. To improve this photograph I would have composed it slightly differently with Amelia slightly more to the right so that none of the writing is covered by her head. The lighting I used for this shoot is very bright as I also feel this made the photos quite like a comic strip.

All a story needs is a beginning a middle and an end so I use the first line as the beginning, second line as the middle and main bulk of the story and the last line as the end. Although this is not an obvious story I feel that it gives enough detail that the audience can choose the story themselves. In each of the photos with words on I tried to get Amelia to stay in the same place as I didn't want this to change the photo. With the three facial expression photos in the middle I was trying to express how in story's there is not just one emotion, often characters go through a range of emotions, as the character does in my photo story. To improve this photo I would just make sure that there is an exact frame around each photo as some of them seem not to be despite the fact they did when I made the photo.

Work record - shoot ten - Little red riding hood

In this shoot I was trying to recreate the fairytale little red riding hood by using the traditional location and costume. I also tried to represent good and bad in this shoot by showing good in light clothing smiling and positive and bad in black with frowns and scowls. I don't feel that this shoot went as well as it could have partly due to the dull weather. If I were to do it again I would do it on a brighter day as this helps produce better photos. I would also slightly alter the location as I feel this location seems to public and obvious.
In this photo I made it all black and white except for the red hood as this is the most important convention of the story and makes the setting seem my serious and scarier. I have placed her off centre as I wanted to suggest that she was surrounded by the woods. Also I new that this would not take te attention off of her as it is the only colour in the photo. To improve this I would make sure Amelia's legs were coloured in as well as the bright red makes her seem almost ghost like which was not something that I intended to acheive.

In this photograph I was trying to portray good and evil. Charlotte is dressed in black and has been edited to be black and white as this makes this half of the photo seem negative. Her facial expression is also shows how she is representing bad as she isfrowning. In contrast Amelia is dressed in white with normal colour photo and is smiling. To improve this photograph I would make sure the line of colour and black and white is straight and I would also try and make the dresses worn by them the same so that the comparison is simply on the colour and facial expression.

Work record - shoot nine - Book woods

I really enjoyed this shoot as I knew exactly how I wanted to do it and that went to plan. I wanted to take photos of Amelia reading and then surround her with the characters from the book that she is reading. I chose the woods as the location as this is the setting of the gruffalo and that is one of the books she was reading. To improve this shoot I would try and make sure that the characters have none of their background on. If I were to do this shoot again I would do even more different books and characters.
In this photograph Amelia is reading the book 'the gruffalo'. During editing I then added the characters from the book around her so that it is as if the characters have come alive. I really like this photograph because is reminds me of childhood and it's as if the characters are sneaking away from Amelia as there existence is secret. To improve this photo  I would just make sure that the background behind the characters has completely gone so that it can't be seen on the new background photograph.
In this photograph I once again chose to put the characters from the book the gruffalo. In this photo however I chose to make them bolder as they are no longer supposed to be a pigment of Amelias imagination but instead have escaped the book. I really like this photograph because once again it reminds me of childhood.  To improve this photo I would just make sure that the tree is arbitrary and central to the photo.

Connecting essay four

This photo represents the wedding day by showing the wedding rings and cream bouquet. This is telling the story through showing a lifes milestone and what is supposed to be the most important day of a gils life. The rings and flower are central with the blackground slightly out of focus. The cream flowers are very natural and pure and could represent the purity f the bride and the colour of the dress. The lighting is on the rings so you can see the detail on them.

In my photograph I have also chosen to show the milestone of getting married in order to tell the story of life. In my photo I have shown different props that would be used on your wedding day such as flowers, rings, the church and horse shoes. The lighting is very bright and colourful as this gives the photo a positive feeling which this day should be. In each photo the thing being photographed is central so that it is the main focus point of the photo, I have also used soft focus to emphasise the main ocus of the photo.

I have connecte these two photographs because they are both showing the milestone of the wedding day. In my photo I have chosen to show many different features from the day including the ring and flowers and then the other photo also uses the flowers and ring. In both photos the main focus is central with soft focus used to emphasise the item. The lighting in both is very light and colourful as this gives the photos a positive feel.

Connecting essay three

This photo tells a story by the way that it lists the different characteristics of the girl in the photo. The photo uses a dark background and black board the only light tones on the photo are the girls skin and this gives the photo quite quickly negative and depressive move. This tells the story of the girls self-esteem issues and then how others view her positively. The lack of detail allows the photo to remain simple but still tells the story that it is trying to tell.

My photo tells a story through a series of photos with a different  word on each photo and a facial expression to match. It also leaves a lot to the imagination as it stands a sentence but gives night background information  out do three the audience can keep it up themselves. I chose to have a dark background to create contrast and more area of thought. To contrast against the dark background Taylor is wearing a white top which also creates a light against dark theme which goes with the story I am trying to tell.

These photos connection because they both tell a story with a series of photos instead of just one. They also both use the prop of the blackboard to tell there story but only tell it discreetly leaving most to the audiences imaginations. They both use a dark background which gives them quite a negative feelings but then contrast this with positive words on the board. Lastly they both use a female model as they have more emotion.

Connecting essay two

I took this photograph using the props and costume in the style of the book Alice in wonderland. I chose not to have Sophie's face in this photograph as I feel it gives the audience more of a chance to relate to the photo as they can imagine the face. However in the photo the traditional long blonde hair can be seen and the short blue dress so that it is clear what story the photo is telling. As in part of the story the characters have a tea party in the woods I have used the tea set as the prop and the woods as the location. In this photograph I made the background black and white with the rest in colour, I did this as in the story Alice is in another abnormal world and in the photo with the world is different to what she is used to.

This Photo was taken by Marina Koslow from her Alice in Wonderland style shoot. She has used a tea set to illustrate the part of the book where Alice attends a tea party. The tea set is very delicate and pretty which makes the photo very attractive. The traditional blonde hair can be seen but is blurred so that the tea set is still the main focus of the photo. The photographer has used the traditional colours of the costume but the dress is slightly different from the one in the original books although it is still clear that Alice in Wonderland is the story being told in the photo.

I have chosen these two photos to connect as they both use props, location and costume from Alice in wonderland. In both photos the tea set has been used to illustrate the part of the story where Alice attends the mad hatters tea party. Also in both photographs the blond hair and Alice dress can be seen but not the face of each model. This makes both photos quite mysterious and allows the audience to imagine the face of the character. Both photos also use the wood setting. Finally both photos make the model and the tea set on a tray the main focus of the photo by either making the rest black and white or using selective focus.

Work record - shoot eight - 18th Birthday shoot

In this shoot I was trying to show the milestone of turning eighteen to tell the story of life. For this shoot I used a few different props which represent turning eighteen, such as balloons, confetti and champagne. As my model is female I used a stereotypical pink background which went with the banners and balloons. The photos from this shoot came out well although I found the pink background was hard to light up and some of the photos came out to light and some were to dark.
I chose this photo because I like that although Taylor is the main focus of the photo, the soft focus is put on the glass and the champagne drawing the eye more towards them. This photo tells the story of turning eighteen because the eighteen banner and glass can be seen and also she is holding a bottle of champagne showing how she can now drink legally and her smile suggests she is having fun. To improve this photograph I would crop the left side slightly so that Taylor is central to the picture with an equal border around her.
I like this photograph because although in the photo the model is clearly a girl, also confirmed by the pink background and balloons the photo does not show Taylor's face making the photo easy for any girl to relate to. To improve this photo I would make sure that Taylor's hair is not in the photograph and use soft focus to make the ballon, glass and champagne more sharp and Taylor and the background blurred.

If I did this shoot again I would try and make the lighting more even so that the background stayed a more similar colour as when putting photos together to edit this became more difficult. I would also do this shoot but with a male model and stereotypical male colours to emphasise how it is not just females who go through this milestone it is men as well.

Connecting Essay one

This photograph was taken by me. The photo shows a baby's feet, held in the hands of its mother. I have made the photograph black and white as it makes the photo natural and simple. All of the delicate lines and detail can be seen on the baby's foot and due to them being central they are the main focus of the photo. The background is made blurry while the feet are in focus so none of the detail has been lost from the delicate feet. Because it is the mother holding the feet this shows the baby and mothers connection.
This photograph was taken by Sue Kennedy. This photo show the feet of a newborn child. The feet are central to the photograph and are framed in a soft, white, natural looking blanket so although they are small and delicate they stand out against the white. By using the white blanket this represents the pureness and innocence of the baby that is not yet tainted by colour and choices. The baby has spread its toes on one of its feet showing that it is a living thing and also showing the movement that it can do even as a newborn. Due to the photo being in really good focus all of the very small and detailed lines can be seen and even though this is a newborn baby and the feet have never been walked on they still have these lines. The lines could be said to represent all of the different paths that the baby could walk down in its life.

I have chosen to connect these two photographs as what they show and there intention is simular. Firstly both photographs show a baby's feet placed centrally within the photo. They also both have the theme of showing the start of life and tell a story in the intricate detail of the feet. Both photos also show the movement of the feet even at this young age as both children have spread out their big toes. Both photos also use a natural plain white background to frame the feet and to make them the main focus point of the photograph.

Photographer Five - Susan Cohen

I have chosen this photographer because her photos show important stages of life for example birth and the relationships between parents and there children. This photographer has interesting style of taking the photos for example some have a very natural background and others a more false studio background. The photographer also takes photos of generations which I would quite like to do in my work.

In this photo there is a natural background which you assume is the woman's home. Although the baby is crying this is still a very attractive photograph because it is natural and shows the baby in a realistic way as baby's do spend a lot of time crying, I like that the photo has been edited to be black and white as this makes the photo more interesting and adds something more to the photo while maintaining the natural feel that it gives. Also the relationship between the baby and the mother has been captured in the photograph telling this story.

In this photograph it shows who you assume is the father and son and allows the audience to see the similarities and differences allowing the audience to interpret their relationship. The photo has quite an unnatural black background which allows the audiences attention to remain entirely on the models in the photograph.

In this photograph the children are shown to be happy and it seems as if the elder looking child is guiding and looking after the younger one shown in the way she places her hand on his arm telling and representing the story of childhood. The photo has very natural lighting and colouring adding to the innocence and naturalness that the children are shown to have in the photograph. The fact that they are both wearing white also shows there innocence and the fact that they are natural and not just smiling at the camera gives the photo a far more natural, relaxed feeling.

In this photograph the boy is slightly of centre but he remains the central focus point. His head is slightly tilted and he is smiling however the photo appears to be quite natural. The audience focus is drawn to the smile and the boys eyes as they are the only things with bright colour against his pale skin. The natural green background also keeps the photo natural and this photo can also be interpreted to represent the stage of life of childhood.

Influence

I would like to take influence from this photographers work. Firstly I would like to try and use generations in my photographs to tell the story of life. I would also like to show the childhood story in my work as these seem to be sweet and attractive photographs.

Summary

Overall this photographer uses both natural and studio backgrounds to achieve natural childhood and family photography. Most of the models in this photographers work are natural instead of posed to maintain the natural feeling that the photos give.

Photographer four - Curtis Irvine

I chose this photographer because the stories that his photographs tell are less make believe and more realistic and life like. I like the use of colour and black and white in his work and how his photos can have many different interpretations.

In this photograph from the Belfast peace walls album their is many different stories and interpretations that can be taken from it. Firstly the graffiti could tell the story of the wall and why it is there as well as the opinions of it being there. The wall is very colourful in comparison to the dull sky and un-painted wall that can be seen suggesting that the graffiti represents the big colourful personality of the person who made graffiti.

In this photograph it could be interpreted that the photo is representing the teenage life story. The character seems to be pulling a face of discontent or unhappiness and along with the fact that the photo is in black and white suggests that she is not particularly happy, an emotion often felt during teenage years.

I like this photograph because it doesn't tell a story as such but allows the audience to create what story they like due to the lack of any focus points.

Like in the first photo this photo is from the Belfast peace walls. From this angle the audience can see the height and the restriction that it causes telling the story it but not telling why it is there. The particular piece of graffiti that it focus's on is quite plain in contrast to the others but the meaning of the statement is quite strong and important so makes the photograph quite powerful.

Influence

I would like to take influence from this photographer because of the way he uses real life things to tell real life stories as a pose to fairy tales. I would like to travel somewhere where there is a powerful  thing of controversy and take photos of it that emphasise the reason it is controversial like for example the height of the wall and how it blocks out the other side.

Summary

Overall this instead of using a studio and well made up and costumed models to tell story's this photographer uses real life objects and people in order to tell realistic everyday stories.

Photographer three - Elena Kalis

I have chosen this photographer because they have a very individual and unique way of creating fairy-tale photography. The fact that each photo is underwater adds to the photos uniqueness and creates very attractive images.

In this photo from the Alice in waterland shoot the photographer has used the water to show the Alice character stepping into the new world. The model is wearing the conventional blue and white dress allowing the audience to know that she is supposed to be this character. The water allows the character to appear as if she is floating making the photo more interesting. The reflection of the model meeting the water is the centre of the photograph making it the main focus point of the photo.

In this photo also from the Alice in waterland shoot the models face can not be seen, just the costume and the book. This allows the audience to choose the face of the character and the air bubble at the top of the photograph makes the photo interesting and different from other fairy tale photographers work.

In this photograph the photographer has used the water once again to make it seem as if the character is floating which in one part of the story when she is falling is likely to be pictured very similarly to this. The water makes it seem as if the cards are flying and floating all around her making the photo seem magical and once again unique. The costume and cards are also once again common props from the book Alice in wonderland.

Once again in this photo the photographer has used the water in order for it to appear that the model is floating to recreate the scene where she is falling. The photographer has also put the clock and rabbit ears into the photograph which are also props representing the character of the white rabbit. The facial expression in this photo allows the audience to see the confusion and lost look that the character feels in this scene.

Influence

Although I like this photographers work I don't think that I could take influence from her due to how difficult it would be to take under water photos. I also don't have an underwater camera.

Summary

Overall this photographer has used the water to create scenes from the story that other story telling photographers would find it difficult to create. The water makes it seem like the character is floating and also makes the photographers work unique and difficult to copy.

Photographer two - Marina Koslow

I have chosen this photographer because I like the individual composition of photos and the simple yet delicate and intricate detail in each photograph. Each photo has an individual way of telling the Alice in wonderland story whilst also being an attractive photograph.

This photograph from the Alice in wonderland inspired shoot is very simple in the layout and content yet the detail on both the teacup and the table cloth makes the photograph more interesting. The cup is placed central so is the main focus of the photo yet the faint detail in the table cloth slightly draws your eye away and makes the photo more interesting. One way that the photo could be interpreted is that the intricate detail and delicacy is representing Alice's character as well as being a teacup a common prop in the story.

I really like this photograph which is also from the Alice in wonderland inspired shoot because the focus is on the tray of the delicate tea set which is placed centrally. The fact that the models face cannot be seen in the photo make it quite mysterious and allows the audience to come up with their own character for the image while still picturing a character similar to the traditional Alice due to the costume and the hair. I think the fact that the models face is cut of is another unique feature used by this photographer which I would like to use in my photography.

Once again this photograph is very simple yet the detail and composition makes the photo more interesting. Because the cups are different sizes and are sitting into each other this could represent the different and unique characters in the story of Alice in wonderland. The focus in the photo is in the very centre of the cups where the detail is but also mostly on the top cup, this makes this the main focus of the photograph.

Once again this photograph from the Alice in wonderland inspired shoot takes the obvious Alice in wonderland prop of the tea set and the blond girl with the dress in order to tell the story. The model is blurred out however she does still seem to be a focus of the photograph although the actual focus is on the tea set and the tea pot in particular.

Influence

I would like to take influence from this photographer and use it in my own photography. I would like to try and not have the models face in the photo to prevent any facial features of expression from the model changing the meaning of the photograph. I would also like to photograph a tea set as it makes attractive and interesting photographs while telling the story of Alice in wonderland.

Summary

Overall this photographer has used simple yet detailed props and costumes from the book in order to create scenes that tell the story. The photographer has put focus on the thing that she wants to be the main focus and what is most important to the photograph.

Photographer one - Carly Bevan

I have chosen this photographer because I like the way she takes simple props and costumes from fairy tales and then uses them to create the story in each photograph. I also like the way the photos are quite unique to the photographer and all seem positive and happy.

This photo is from the Peter Pan style shoot and takes the part with the lost boys and shows it in the photo. The sign appears to be quite deserted and lost which is how the lost boys are in the story. The sign is central so it is the first thing that the audience looks at. The photo is quite plain and natural and then the coloured fabric makes the photo a little bit more interesting.

This photograph is also from the Peter Pan shoot. I really like this photo because it uses a child character similar to which would be in the story and is in a costume similar to that which would be worn. The photo also shows the gun another prop from the story so allows this section of the story to be told through this photograph. Once again the model is central in the picture making it the main focus point.

This photo is also from the Peter Pan shoot but tells a different part of the story. The photographer has used a very busy setting and costume in order to tell the story in this photo. The models are slightly off centre in this photo because they are not supposed to be the only main focus in this photograph. I like the way the models faces are not seen because this allows the audience to create their own characters and story.

This is my favourite out of Carly Bevan's photos because it is simple but because the photo is of a book which gives the audience a wide range of interpretations. For example a book can be anything from a religious book to a fairy tale. I also like the fact that the book is in focus and slightly off centre but is still the main focus of the photograph.

Influence

Carly Bevan will influence my work because I would like to use models but not use there face so the audience can choose how they interpret my photographs. I would also like to take photographs with simply the costumes or props from the film to make simple photographs while still telling the story.

Summary

Overall I like this photographer because her photographs are unique and tell the story's well. I also like how some of the photographs are simple and some of them are more full and full of intricate detail.

Work record - shoot seven - Alice in Wonderland (woods)

In this shoot I wanted to improve my last Alice in wonderland shoot using props, costumes and location. I wanted to really try and get the story across through each individual photograph. I think this shoot went quite well although to improve I would try and think of more unique composition for the photographs to make them more interesting.

In this photo I made the background black and white so that Sophie would stand out and so that it was as if she was in a different world as she is in the story. I used the Alice in wonderland costume and tea set as in the story there is the tea party so I thought it would help to tell the story. To improve the photo I would take it when the wind wasn't blowing because the hair and dress are no longer central which changes the photo.
In this photo the teacup can be seen through a hole in the ground that was similar to a rabbit whole. In the story Alice falls down a rabbit hole in to another world and in part of the story she attends a tea party. I took this photo because it directly represents this part of the story as you are looking through the rabbit hole the teacup can be seen. I think the composition of the photo works well because the hole and teacup are central and the cup is in focus.

Work record - shoot six- Shoes

For this shoot I wanted to show the different generations through something that goes with you through life. I think this shoot went well although I would try and give the shoes more of a connection than just colour such as shape and design as some of the shoes were heels which made it harder when editing.

I like this photo because as the size shoe moves on the photo's becomes in focus showing how there is an advancement as you get older and by this point you are stereotypically at your wisest. However to improve this photo I would cut round the shoes more precisely as some of the dark background can still be seen.

This photo shows each pair of shoes clearly but also shoes the generations as they go on. I love the fact that all of the shoes are the same colour and the first and last pair seem to end up a similar shape due to the need of comfort and stability. Each pair represents a stage of life. The first one is baby or very young toddler. The next shoes represent toddlers up to childhood. The next are late childhood to early teenage years.

Work record - shoot five - Chalk board

In this shoot I was trying to use facial expressions to tell a story and using the black board to actually name the feeling that I was trying to create for each Photograph. I think that this shoot went well because the photos turned out as i wanted them to and the strong facial expressions were backed up by what was written on the board.
I think that this photo worked really well because the expression on Taylor's face is dull and emotionless and the word on the board is hate which is a negative word. I also like that I have used a dark background and edited the photo to be black and white making Taylor and the black board the most important thing in the photo. To improve this photo I would try and write the word so that it is a bit more bold as the whole of each letter is not totally clear.
I think this photograph works well because each photo has a slightly different emotion to the next. The emotions on the unimportant words are quite neutral and the emotion words have the facial expression to illustrate them. I really like how the last photo is larger than the rest and you can tell from Taylor's eyes that she is smiling without seeing the rest of her face. When I edited them I made the writing more prominent however I think that this is to obvious that this has been edited and contrasts slightly with the dark simplistic background.

Disscussion

Story telling

Stories can be told in many ways in photography and through different forms of photography.
The first way I have found stories are told through photography is in a series of photographs physically capturing the change and development of a scene. They are laid out in chronological order so the order the story in is obvious to the audience.

In this photo you can see the action of the man as it progresses at the photo goes on. The photos are laid out in a simple easy to understand was so that the content of the story is not complicated with fancy layouts. I would like to use this style of story telling in my work by photographing things that are likely to develop and progress so that I can tell a story of that object.

Another way I found photos tell stories is through setting up a powerful scene with a character using strong body language and facial expression in order to tell a story through one single photo. In this photo the room is quite dark and dingy, the door is open yet the character in the photo seems as if they are trapped or unhappy in the location. There are many interpretations that the audience can take from this photo due to lack of explanation.

Setting up a scene from an already well-known fairy tales and Myths is another way I have found stories are told though photography. I have also found that the important conventions in fairy tale/ myth photos are the costumes, location and props that define each fairy tale/Myth from one and other as you can be seen very vibrant coloured costumes and ribbons against a darkish forest background is used in the photos above.

The last way I have found stories told in photography is with the comic strip style and layout. They use the bright colours, editing and speech bubbles in order to physically illustrate and tell a story. The conventions I have found with this idea are bright colours, over reaction facial expressions and body language, chronological order to the photos and speech bubble.

In my work I would like to try each of these ideas in order to complete story telling. To complete this I will try and take the conventions from each method of photographic story telling and use them to create my photographs.
